Fall 2011 Greene County License Courses

The Greene County Amateur Radio License Courses, jointly sponsored by the three Greene County amateur radio clubs (Bellbrook, Fairborn and Xenia) and Greene County ARES, will be held concurrently on Sunday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 PM beginning September 11 and continuing through November 6.

An exam session is scheduled for Sunday, November 13, at 6:00 PM. There is no charge for the courses or the test session but all students are encouraged to have a copy of the respective ARRL License Manual.

Current editions of each license manual will be available the first two weeks of the ourses at a discounted price of $26 including sales tax.

2011 USAF Marathon Volunteer Sign-Ups!

Now is the time to sign up to help out on the 2011 USAF Marathon on September 17. They rely on our expertise and really appreciate the job we do. This year we need at least 55 individuals to provide logistics and emergency communications from the Hydration Stations to the Race Officials.

Go to the USAF Marathon web site click on the volunteer at banner at the top of page and register. Ensure you pick race day activities and you will find Amateur Radio operator under "Race Day Activities". Please ensure you put your call sign in the comments section. If you have base privileges please list that in the comments section and mark the appropriate block. If you had an assignment you liked last year please contact the team via email to reserve your spot. All volunteers will receive a special Air Force Marathon Volunteer t-shirt, goody bag, and volunteer certificate.

Kettering Holiday at Home Parade and 5K Run

Coming up September 5th, 2011 is the Kettering Holiday At Home Parade and 5k run. This is the 53rd year for the Miami Valleys Largest Parade and Amateur Radio has been helping out with it for 25 or more years! We perform multiple tasks with the parade and 5k run from helping to stage the parade, to patroling the route on bicycle mobiles, and more! 25 or more volunteers are needed for this event! Volunteers are asked to be at the Shell Gas Station at the corner of Stroop Road and Far Hills Avenue by 7am for placement. At 8am there will be a 5k race which we support and then the Parade begins at 9:55am and should be over around noon. Primary Net operations will be on the Kettering 147.075 Repeater and backup operations will be on 146.940 (123 tone).

Calvin's Challenge

Saturday April 30th the Calvin’s Challenge 12 Hour Bike Race is held each year on the weekend before Mother’s Day, starting at 7:30 am at Shawnee High School in Springfield at 1675 E. Possum Run Road and traveling a scenic 50 mile loop south and east through Clark, Madison, and Greene Counties. We are in need of many volunteers to work the event. The bikes will be crossing many highly traveled roads and we provide a much needed service in helping them do this safely. A mobile radio with 50 watts of power and an outside antenna is helpful for this event. We are planning to use the Springfield 145.310 repeater as a primary net frequency. Also for those working all day, there will be lunch provided.

Please come out and help at least part of the day. We really need help for this event!

Operators Needed to Assist Full Marathon

On Sunday April 3rd is the 22nd Annual Ohio River Road Runners Club Full and Half Marathons. Both events begin at 8:30am at the Xenia YMCA at 135 East Church Street in Xenia. The event winds around the neighborhoods of Xenia and then follows the bike path to the northeast to beyond Cedarvile and then comes back. We will be needing 15-20 volunteers. Also bicycle-mobile operators would be helpful. Checkin/Net Control will be at the XWARN Communications Trailer, which will be setup at the YMCA starting at 7am, we will making assignments starting at 7:30am. A directed Net will be held on the 147.165 repeater.

Please come out and help out with this first large event for the year!

Amateur Radio will Support the 25th Annual Resolution Run

There’s no better way to bring in the New Year than the Beavercreek High School 5K Resolution Run!! This annual event is a GREAT TIME!! 30 plus operators are needed to provide health/safety communications and to illuminate the course with their car headlights. The race begins at 8pm again this year with operators asked to report by 7pm. However everyone is invited to come out earlier for some pre-event festivities!

Assorted food will be available in the XWARN Trailer along with some great friends. Come out and enjoy!

Primary Net Control will be on the 146.910 (no pl) Greene County Ares Repeater with backup on the 147.165 (100Hz pl) XWARN Repeater. So Grab your calendar and mark down the Resolution Run as your plans for New Years Eve!!

Santa Run Needs Operators

On Saturday December 4th In Xenia is the SANTA RUN. This 5k Run benefits the Womens Recovery Center in Xenia. We are in need of 15-20 volunteers for this event. Net operations will be on the 147.165 XWARN Repeater (100hz PL) with backup on 147.570 Simplex. Operators are asked to report to the Womens Recovery Center at 8:30 for assignment on the course. The address is 515 Martin Drive, Xenia Ohio. The START will be at the Womens Recovery Center with the FINISH at the rear of Greene Memorial by the Auditorium.

This event should be over by 11:30 so please come out and help!

Help Needed: Amateur Radio Supports The Cross Country Mid-East Regionals

Coming up on Saturday November 20st is the Cross Country Mid East Regionals at Indian Riffe Park on Stroop Road. We need about 8-10 operators for this event. Operators are asked to report by 10am for assignment on the course. This event should be over around 1pm.

Net control will be on 147.570 Simplex with 147.555 Simplex as a backup.

Anyone who is interested in gathering for breakfast beforehand is invited to join us at Christopher's at 2318 East Dorthy Lane(at the Intersection of Woodman in the shopping center on the south east corner) at 8:00am.

Open Challenge race at 12 noon is for any age, so come, watch, and run. Beginning at 11:00 watch the best high school seniors compete from six states in an exceptional display of cross country running!

Weather Spotter Networks

Reminder to sign-up for our TXT alerts and monitor the repeater(147.165) for possible weather net or EOC activations. Please understand that watches or warnings alone will not activate a spotters net in our county. We normally will only activate if severe weather is in or approaching the county and Dayton Skywarn is up.

If a formal weather net is not activate, we do still monitor the repeater for Weather Reports during Storms. If you are experiencing reportable conditions and are unable to contact the National Weather Service (NWS) on the 1-800 number provided during the Spotters Training. Please ask for assistance or for a Net Control Operator on the repeater. Your report could issue a warning from the NWS and/or prompt us to activate a weather net. Visit the Dayton Skywarn Website at www.dayton-skywan.org for a list of reportable severe weather. Thank you from all the net control's at XWARN & the Greene County Skywarn Nets.

Amateur Radio Test Session

An Open Test Session for all classes of Amateur Radio License will be conducted Sunday, April 25, 2010 in the Training Room at Beavercreek Township Fire Station 1. Registration will begin at 6:00 PM and testing will begin shortly thereafter. Walk-ins are welcome. Pre-registration is not required. For additional information, contact Fred Stone, W8LLY, by email at W8LLY@ARRL.net or by phone at 470-6948 (between 8 AM and 8 PM).

Applicants must bring:

* the original and one copy of current license, if any
* the original and one copy of any Certificates of Successful Completion of
* Examination (CSCE)
NOTE: The original documents will be returned to the applicant and the COPY will be retained with the application.

* positive identification (photo ID)
* Social Security Number (TIN) or FCC Federal Registration Number (FRN)
NOTE: You can apply for an FRN by going to: http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/index.htm?job=home or simply searching on FCC ULS. Select REGISTER and follow the directions. If you do not have an FRN, you must use your Social Security Number on your application and the FCC will assign an FRN with your license grant.

Beavercreek Township Fire Station 1 is located at 2195 Dayton-Xenia. Parking is located at the west end of the building. Entrance to the Training Room is located on the back side at the west end. Look for and follow the Sheriff Substation signs. A few steps are involved but an alternate ground level entrance is available. If ground level access is needed, please contact Fred Stone W8LLY at (937) 470-6948 to make arrangements.

Weather Spotters Class

The National Weather Service Office in Wilmington will be holding a Weather
Spotter Class next Tuesday, February 9th at 6:30 pm at the Greene County Media
Room at 541 Ledbetter Rd., Xenia.

XWARN should be so proud of these kids. Last summer we made a donation to get the Kids of XKAR on their feet ready to compete in the First Lego Robotics Competition. A lot of a hard work and a few short months later..........you see them pictured here..........XKAR at their Regional Competition at Wright State............They won 2nd for Quality Design, placed 7th in the Robotics Competition(out of 34 teams) and scored high on all marks from the judges( graded in programing, teamwork, project, presentation, & design)........Go XKAR! Great Job.................such a great energetic place to be! I look forward to XWARN continuing our support of the this group and their coaches. Promoting Science, math, and teamwork........XKAR was a rookie this year, just wait till next year!!!!!!!!!

For our Monday night meeting, we will welcome XKAR!

The kids from XKAR (http://www.xkar.org/), will be coming out to use us a practice. The kids are one month away from their regional compentation and we have invited them out to practice their presentation and robot set-up in front of a live studio audience. Be patient, these are young kids, who most have never spoke in front of a crowd.3. Elections, we will have one office, the office of Vice President, and two very qualified candidates running.

Reminder, its also elections night...we will be voting for office of Vice President. The County Library representive will be onhand to accept our donation of ARRL License Manuals for the Xenia & Beavercreek locations.

Trick -or- Treat

Saturday, October 31st, from 6 - 8 pm will be the annual Beggars Night Net!! This an informal net where operators from all over the Miami Valley checkn and join in some Halloween Fun while we keep an eye out for any inappropiate Halloween Activites. Many of us walk around our neighborhoods to make sure that "TREATS" are occuring instead of "TRICKS". Some patrol in their vehicles. So come out and enjoy Halloween and join us on the 147.165 XWARN Repeater for a "GHOSTLY" GOOD TIME!!

Xenia Township Fire Department Open House

On Sunday October 4th 2009 at the Xenia Township Fire Station south of Xenia on State Route 68 is the annual Xenia Township Fire Department Open House. The open house is from 12 to 3pm and is a GREAT TIME! Many displays are on-hand! Both the Dara Communications Van and the XWARN Communications Trailer will be on-hand to demonstrate the many aspests of Amateur Radio. 5 or so volunteers are needed to talk with the general public about Amateur Radio and its many capabilities.

Safety Days

The XWARN trailer was at Lowes Safety Days, today, at the Lowes on Wilmington Pike. The trailer, along with the DARA van, were on display with First Responder vehicles from Miami Valley Hospital, & Sugarcreek Fire & Police departments. The operators on hand gave demonstrations to parents & youth. Thank you to Lowes and our members who came out and made the day special.

Parade Thank You & Winners

Also as many know, XWARN sponsers a Lego's Robotics Team, named XKAR. The kids where hard at work this weekend putting a float in the parade. Which took 1st place for Non-Commercial Float.

Greene County Amateur Radio License Courses currently are being planned. These courses are sponsored jointly by the three Greene County amateur radio clubs (BARC, UVARC and XWARN) and GCARES.

A Technician Class Course definitely will be offered. A General Class Course and/or an Extra Class Course will be offered if the there is sufficient interest. Each course will use the respective ARRL License Manual.

Courses offered will start Sunday evening, September 13 and continue weekly for eight or nine weeks. A Test Session will be held on Sunday evening, November 15. Classes start at 7:00 PM and are targeted to end around 9:00 PM.

If you know of anyone interested in becoming a ham, be sure to let them know about the Greene County Technician Class Course. If you are already licensed and desire to upgrade, be sure to let us know right away.

Public Service Event, Needs Help!

The Young's Dairy Charity Bike Tour for 2009, one of the areas largest public service event of the year, is on Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, July 26th. The two day tour covers several Ohio counties, comprising up to 100 miles, so a large number of ham radio operators will be needed. As with last year, I will soon be including the details of this event on a web page so that everyone can view and print whatever they need.   The tour starts at 8:00 AM on Saturday from Young's Dairy, which is on Highway 68, north of Yellow Springs, just south of the Springfield airport. There are several route options available to various riders on Saturday, up to 100 miles. The route on Saturday is 83 miles straight back to Young's Dairy. The tour goes to Ohio Northern University in Ada on the first day, and returns to Young's Dairy on the second day. You can view the route at
